Passwords

If you've ever lost your wallet, you know the sense of vulnerability that comes with it. Someone might be walking around with your identification, pretending to be you. If someone stole your passwords, they could do the same thing online. A hacker could be opening new credit card accounts, applying for mortgages, or chatting online disguised as you-and you wouldn't know it until it was too late. Read on to learn how you can help protect your identity online by creating stronger passwords.

Are you using weak passwords?

We hosted a Business Technology EXPO and customer appreciation event Friday, Sept. 26th on a gorgeous, unseasonal afternoon! Thanks to the 300+ people who came out to our event to view the latest technologies available from our partners-- HP, Lexmark, IBM, VMware, Cisco, OKI, WatchGuard, Symantec, NEC Displays/Rise Vision, Vizioncore, Aurora, Targus and Synnex. Local partners were also part of the event—Cedar Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce, Involta, Kurtz Communications, Options of Linn County, New Horizons, Nelson Electric and Midwest Electronic Recyclers.

The event included a spotlight on the rebuilding of downtown from the summer flood. A silent auction (with items including iPods, an iPAQ, wine gift baskets, printers and other technology items), a Wii® bowling tournament, a dunk tank (staffed with the Erb’s management team, sales execs and the marketing manager) and “Rebuild Downtown” t-shirt sales all helped raise thousands of dollars for the Job & Small Business Recovery Fund to help local businesses recover from the devastating flood. Erb’s will present the check to the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation later in October.

If you were not able to join us, give us a call to learn more about green, eco-friendly technologies that will help your company save money. . . and be kinder to the environment!

Riding the Economic Rollercoaster

Stephen Minton, vice president, Worldwide IT Markets and Strategies, IDC, offers insight on how outsourcing can help you ride out the economic downturn—and maybe even gain a leg up on the competition along the way.

Rising gasoline prices. Falling consumer confidence. Subprime mortgages. Inflation. Budget cuts. Currency fluctuations. Floods, droughts and crop shortages. Each day's news seems to add to the torrent of challenges heading our way. No business is immune—but outsourcing can offer a way to leverage technology to help stem the negative tide.

Here, IDC's Stephen Minton shares his expert views and experience on the subject—and puts some useful perspective around when it does and does not make sense to consider outsourcing in today's volatile economic climate.

Recession. Downturn. Call it what you will—what's the impact on business decisions to outsource or buy IT services?

Historically, when faced with an economic downturn, companies do one of two things:
